Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

5 stars

Excellent.
I didn't think I would cry so much during a comic movie. (+5 tp)

Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk (2016)

3 stars

Really good but I think the ending isn't as satisfying or spectacular as I'd hoped. (0 tp)

Passengers (2016)

4.5 stars

Sort of a mix between Castaway, A.I., and its own thing.
I thought it got pretty deep for what looked like a summer blockbuster.

John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017)

5 stars

I didn't even know I could review...

You know, I'm gonna give this 5 stars. Why? It really transcends the genre. It's not just a great action movie, with the great GunFu, it's more. The humor, the irony are musts to mention (oddly I'm laughing constantly in this movie where no one else is), but I really love this alternate universe they've created. It has the crazy "constantine" feel of the underground world that these characters live in, where there are rules and neutral ground, and codes and recognized players. It's like part Blade, part Constantine and part Matrix.

These great elements are what makes it transcend though; this movie has some of the absolute most BEAUTIFUL sets and shots I have seen in a decade. My god, the color composition and layout of the suicide scene made me feel like I was looking at a work of art, the same with the museum, and the final Bruce Lee style mirror shoot out. I was just spellbound by what I saw on the screen.

Simply amazing. (+5 tp)

John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017)

4.5 stars

This movie is really really good.
4.75 stars good, maybe even 5 stars good.
My minor quibbles with the 1st John Wick was it was straight action with little story, this chapter is better than the first and adding some humor and time to breath along with amazing action balanced with quite a bit of realism makes this darn near perfect. (+5 tp)

Rogue One...loved it. Good story, some absolutely amazing effects, and what i think is the greatest space battle in SW history. I think it fits seemlessly into SW lore.

a bunch of good reviews. Yeah, did any of you see Rogue 1? I hear mixed, but polarized reviews... like love or hate.

The Revenant (2015)

2 stars

Some pretty visuals but way way way too slow and not enough story. For comparison The Good,Bad, and Ugly is probably longer but didn't feel like it. (-1 tp)

The Man from U.N.C.L.E (2015)

4 stars

This was a bit of a sleeper.

I'd barely heard about it so I wasn't going to see it in theater.

The beginning seemed like it was shot in the style of Sin City (minus the over color theme) and it had some neat flute or woodwind music which reminded me of Snatch ( which makes sense because Guy Ritchie directed this one too).

It was nice to see Henry Cavill/Superman actually get to act...he's not bad.

Pretty good movie and I hope they make more because it was better than other 1960s Spy TV movie attempts such as Avengers, The Saint , and Get Smart ( which hurts because that TV show was one of my favorites. (+5 tp)

The Martian (2015)

3.5 stars

Science took.

It's a introspective movie and makes you realize how smart workers in the space program have to be and how difficult things can be when you're in uncharted territory. (+2 tp)

What, no R1 reviews?

I added it. Not sure if I did it right on here or not. It won't let me review it.

Big Short was amazing and really entertaining. I actually use a few clips when teaching some topics from the era. Visual aids are more fun than me talking about it on some slide.

The Big Short (2015)

4.5 stars

I love movies about the GFC already, and this was one of the better. Good cast, and it drove home just exactly how out of control it all was in 2005. I loved the parts were some celebrity explained the complex financial instruments.

Even *I* didn't know what a synthetic CDS was lol. Crazy. A bit long, but highly recommended (+5 tp)

The only thing I wished they included was a way to stop the banks in the future or punish them. (+5 tp)

The Inflitrator (2016)

3.5 stars

Started slow and had that feel of scenes being thrown together to quicken the pace of a movie that takes a decent amount of time. Was worried that it was going nowhere but the tense ending stepped up in a huge way.

Very interesting reflection on the war on drugs; what it takes to go undercover, and how different punishment was then compared to today.

This year has been god awful for most movies.

Ghostbusters was the worst pile of Hollywood drivel in years. The only good part of it was that there were women starring in it. Imagine it had Seth Rogan and his ilk?

Please let Rogue One be good.
